The Kid's Fishing Derby has become an annual event sponsored by the Cities of Key Colony Beach, and Marathon, hosted by the Key Colony Beach Police Department and sponsored by the Key Colony Beach Fishing and Boating Club.
The Derby was founded in 2006 by KCB Chief of Police, Kris DiGiovanni. Each year, in June, the Derby is offered to children from ages 6 to 14 ears old. There is no entrance fee for the children who are taken out for a half day of fishing and in general an entire day of special treatment.
After fishing the kids attend the awards ceremony where they get lunch and all kinds of prizes and gifts, all supplied by the Derby sponsors.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies are awarded to the winners of each age group. The age groups are 6- to 8-year-olds, 9- to 11-year-olds and 12- to 14-year-olds. The winners of 1st place in their age category also received a very special prize!
In 2022 over 67 generous sponsors made the derby work. The sponsors and volunteers are the reason why the children are able to attend this free event.
